What’s Going to Help Save More From Falling Victim
to Gun Violence and Gun Crime?

Reducing the number of guns in circulation and limiting the kinds of guns that can be sold are the only things that will affect public safety concerning guns and gun violence because more guns just means more gun crime and deaths. So many guns are already in circulation existing gun laws are difficult to enforce. With over 200 million firearms in circulation, 70 million of which are handguns (Watkins), it’s no surprise that the existing gun laws have become more difficult to enforce. The number of guns released and put into circulation each year needs to be reduced in order for there to be a change in how many guns remain in circulation. This is the only way to affect the number that is currently in circulation. This is also the only democratic way to do it because realistically there is no way for a country to democratically locate and seize the guns people already own. Over 4 million new guns enter the market every year (Ruben). Putting more guns into more hands will not make our society safer but by enacting legislation to limit the number of guns in our communities more lives will be able to be saved. Another way to reduce violence and save lives would be to get all the names of people who should be prohibited from buying a gun into the background check system. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) which is responsible and used to conduct background checks on prospective gun buyers has millions of missing records and needs to update the system (Watkins, An Updated Background Check System Will Help Prevent Gun Violence). Also every federal agency should be required to certify to the Attorney General twice a year that they have submitted all relevant records.
