The human liked to frighten himself for the entire existence of art, but only the appearance of the cinema made depiction of fear as real and graphical as to make people actually see it. Over the course of the 20th century the horror movies of all kinds, from crudely primitive to rather intellectual have been extremely popular and remain to be so in the 21st one. But why? The main reason, in my opinion, is that, no matter what people say about modern world and how terrible it is, the fact that the life of the majority of people is much safer and pleasanter than it used to be in the ages passed is certain.
