Why Should Animal Cruelty Laws Pertain To Farm Animals?
In our childhood years, we were brought up with being taught about farmed animals. When it came to learning the basics, such as the names of our animals and what sounds they make, farmed animals are what we automatically responded with. As soon as we got older we became less familiar and careless about these farmed animals. In society today, when it comes to animal cruelty, we often just think of our basic animals such as “dogs and cats”, but what about chickens, sheep, pigs and cows? ( Premise 1) Whereas, we often tend to forget that these farmed animals are some of our most important animals living today. Some of the laws we have today that protect our animals against cruelty are The Animal Welfare Act and The Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. Yes these acts protect animals such as dogs, cats, and rabbits from animal cruelty but sadly these acts don’t include farmed animals. (Premise 2) Given that farmed animals are animals, they should be protected from animal cruelty with these acts. Since society wants inexpensive meat, eggs, and dairy, these farmed animals are treated as objects instead of individuals. If we watch television shows such as “Animal Cops”, we are well familiar with the animal cruelty of dogs and cats that is taking place in society today but, we don’t know of the cruel and deadly actions that are taking place on factory farms across the world. The ASPCA sends someone to arrest a person for killing their pet rabbit when in reality there are large amounts of torture of cows, sheep, chickens and pigs. People get arrested for kicking a dog, yet no one is being punished for castrating piglets and cutting cow’s necks. Why should animal cruelty laws pertain to farmed animals?
