  PREFACE

      Although, Punjab is primarily an agrarian state, the future lies in the development of industry, by harnessing the synergies in agriculture and industry through the development of agricultural-based industry, by further strengthening base manufacturing Industries, and by rapid development of service and knowledge-based industry. The engineering goods industry which represents a stage of economic transition from traditional to modern technology plays a strategic role in the progress of the State and has made a significant contribution in terms of output, employment and export earnings. However, during the past few years, engineering industry has been feeling the pressure of the liberalized economic regime especially in Punjab. The problem of sickness and closures of the engineering industry is equally alarming.   Working capital management, which refers to the management of current assets and current liabilities, aims to protecting the purchase of assets and maximizing the return on investment. Management of current assets and liabilities represented mainly by cash, inventories, bills receivable and bills payable, is a continuous process and occupies a major portion of financial manager’s time.
