Political Figure

Taking up political science wasn’t the choice of my parents. They never forced me into studying it; in fact, what they really want for me s to become a doctor. But nonetheless, I have chosen the path of political science. When they asked me why I chose this kind of course, it’s because of the fact that what I wanted was to become a lawyer. When they asked me who inspired me, I told them that it was Miss Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

Miriam Defensor-Santiago is a very famous Filipina lawyer and politician not only in the Philippines, but maybe also around the world. In fact, she was ranked 69th among the 100 most powerful Southeast Asian women. She graduated as valedictorian on both elementary and high school and graduated magna cum laude in University of the Philippines with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. She has also achieved many degrees, like Master of Laws, and many more and has taken it from famous universities like Oxford University, Harvard University, etc. She has also taught Law in University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, Colegio de San Juan de Letran and University of Perpetual Help Rizal. She has earned the Ramon Magsaysay Award for being a great commissioner. She has been also named as the most outstanding senator.

Santiago has served as a senator since 1995. She ran for president in the 1998 election but candidate Joseph Ejercito Estrada won, after then she returned being a senate continuing up to the present day. She was also one of the eleven senators who voted against opening a bank envelope that is said to keep evidence of Estrada’s guilt.

She became my inspiration in taking up political science because of her capability of becoming a very trusted politician, or a human. Despite having numerous corrupt officials in our government, only a few can be trusted, and Santiago is one of them. I want to be someone who could be relied on, even if I will be doing things alone.
