Why I Choose Nursing

For me, nursing is more than just a simple career or job, it’s a privilege that measures our values as human beings.   Touching the life of others is a treasure that is immeasurable.   One of the persons I admire and has motivated me to become a successful nurse is my mother.   A very hard worker, dedicated to her job, patient, compassionate to the ill, a person that even though she couldn’t accomplish her dream to become a nurse is today a very recognized home attendant at her work.   Kindness, patience, responsibility, honesty, integrity are some of the great values she has inculcated me that are very valuable to me.   She is simply my inspiration to one day become a nurse and make her proud of me.  
My journey to decide if I would be able to handle this career began when I served as a volunteer in the Emergency room at Mount Sinai Hospital in Queens for a period of 3 months.   An amazing experienced that marked my life completely when encountering with patients that had different kind of illness, some sad, some curable some others unfortunately not.   A place where I experienced many emotions but they all leaded to the same path, to help these patients as much as I can.   It was there where I understood that I was in the correct path.   I had the opportunity to interact with nurses and observe very closely how they approach their tasks at all times.   Moreover, my duties while being a volunteer at Mount Sinai Hospital was to make patients and their families feel as comfortable as possible. I would direct patients and their families where they needed to go, communicate patient and family needs to the appropriate medical staff, as needed, provided patients with food, pillows and blankets when requested but most importantly, company and help them forget about their pain.   I learned that the strong feeling of accomplishment and self-worth when I touched a person’s life was more than gratified and to receive compliments from my supervisors was very satisfying.   After each...
