Why Homosexual Marriage Should Be Permitted
We all know marriage to be a union between a man and a woman, but there are many same-sex couples that wish to unite their love for one another through marriage. Gay marriage is the union of two partners of the same sex, also known as same-sex marriage. The debate over same-sex marriage has grown over the years into a nationwide controversy. The debate is whether or not same-sex marriage should be permitted. How can we be sure which side of the argument on same-sex marriage is right? Both sides are very interesting, but this paper is will argue and defend that same-sex marriage should be permitted. Same-sex marriage should be permitted for two reasons. Same-sex relationships are just as natural anymore as heterosexual relationships, and same-sex couples should have the same rights as that of opposite-sex couples do in their relationships.
First, let’s look at the first reason to permit same-sex marriage. As we all know, the norm in all human society is heterosexuality. This is where sexual attractions to someone are of the opposite sex. But in every society, a significant number of people have experienced homosexuality. This is where sexual attraction to someone is of the same sex (Macionis, Ch. 6 para. 1). Just to show that homosexual relationships are as natural as heterosexual relationships; let’s look at a 2004 study.
A 2004, study showed that homosexual relationships are as natural as heterosexual relationships by examining both homosexual partners living together without children compared to both heterosexual married partners living together with children. The results indicated that homosexual partners were no different from heterosexual partners. The study also indicated that homosexual partners actually functioned better than heterosexual partners (Kurdek, L., 2002, pg. 800 para. 1).
