Two Minor Characters in Macbeth
           
                Macbeth is an extremely powerful and moving play with a very unique cast of characters.   While we all appreciate the main characters in the story, the minor characters play a vital role in the overall flow of the storyline.  King Duncan and Banquo are two minor characters in Macbeth whose role are important to the development of the play.
          Macbeth was granted three prophesies from the witches: Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King of Hereafter. Although Macbeth was already Thane of Glamis, he wanted the other two prophesies. In Act I Scene IV, King Duncan thought very highly of Macbeth for his success in battle. Later on in the scene King Duncan crowned Macbeth Thane of Cawdor for his heroic fight. “My worthy Cawdor” At this point Macbeth has fulfilled two of the three prophesies.   Macbeth begins having wicked thoughts on how to fulfill the last prophesy.   In the next scene, King Duncan comes for a surprise visit to Macbeth’s castle. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth about the kings surprise visit and also tells him that if he desires to be King, he must kill King Duncan. Lady Macbeth goes on to explain how he should kill King Duncan. In the next Act, Macbeth kills Duncan but frames it on the guards.
                The ever changing relationship between Macbeth and King Duncan is complicated.   Without King Duncan, Macbeth would never have been Thane of Cawdor.   King Duncan had great respect and admiration for Macbeth. In the end Macbeth had to commit the ultimate betrayal against King Duncan in order to accomplish his ultimate goal of becoming king.
                Throughout the play, Banquo was a close friend to Macbeth but becomes in the way of Macbeth success.   The beginning of the play when Macbeth meets the witches for the first time, Banquo warns Macbeth it’s not a good idea to listen to them.
