This essay focuses on the reasons for which I am seeking my college degree, also highlighting on my learning style, referencing “Learn More Now”, by Marcia L. Conner. Further, the essay will discuss my “Grand Type”, as determined in the GEMS survey results.
In reviewing my results from the GEMS survey and a few short quizzes in “Learn More Now”, I have discovered that my rationale for seeking my degree is not solely focused on a goal to challenge myself in a more interesting career. I have discovered that the whole process of continuing to learn may be calling me back to college.
Conner discusses three varying types of learners in “Learn More Now”, citing visual learners, auditory learners and tactile or kinesthetic learners. She provided a quiz to help the reader asses the preferred learning style. While I felt that most of the responses characterized how I might react in many of the question areas, I was assessed primarily as a visual learner, with the secondary learning style being auditory. This assessment was somewhat of a surprise for me since I consider myself a hands-on learner. I could see how labeling students into one or two of these categories may not be a good practice in all instances. For example, I react with a visual learning style when it comes to certain tasks, such as assembling a wooden cabinet. I could easily review a set of plans and then build it. On the other hand, there are certain tasks which would require me to use a kinesthetic learning style.
