It can be difficult to decide who is and who is not a carer, i believe it is important to identify this as the carers are entitled to financial and emotional help.
Everyday things such as cooking, cleaning, getting the children ready for school attending dental/hospital appointments etc..is known as ‘care’, however the meaning of ‘carer’ is a little different, carer is used for someone who needs support i.e. sickness, disability, age. This however is a difficult decision to make as the change can have a huge impact on peoples lives. In some occasions it can be a relief to be recognised as they then can receive the help and support that they are entitled to. On the other hand some people feel as if it is their duty as they care for family/relatives. I have chosen someone who is being cared for by family members, who we shall call Mrs M.
Mr B and Mrs B are brother and sister and who care for Mrs M. Mrs M has been diagnosed with Dementia and is slowly deteriorating, in need of constant help and support with the likes of washing, cleaning, shopping, doctor/hospital appointments, help with medication (as she often forgot to take it) and all sorts of daily activities that some people take for granted.
Having spoken to Mrs B, she feels she needs to help Mrs M in anyway possible as she is a family member, Mrs B has dropped a considerable amount of hours from her work to care for Mrs M, which is taking its toll.
Mrs B has talked me through their daily routine, which goes as follows: Mr B arrives at Mrs M’s house at 7.30am to give her breakfast and medication and to make sure she is bathed etc..Mr B and Mrs M will then choose what she is to wear today as to ensure she is presentable, as left to her own devices would dress inappropriately.
