Who’s Against School Uniforms?
The use of school uniforms is one of the greatest debates on the school board as we speak today. Enforcing school uniforms will have many negative results. Firstly, school uniforms interfere with children’s self-expression. Secondly, they create obstacles for dealing with low and high tolerance and acceptance towards people and people’s lifestyles and outlooks. Thirdly, school uniforms may be rather expensive for some people, considering the economic crisis of 2008.
One of the hugest issues in modern society in the school system is the problems caused by student appearances. Children would most likely enjoy dressing the way they want, but teachers and board members would rather see them in uniforms. There are people for and against school uniforms, both with reasonable claims. In my opinion, students should not be forced to wear uniforms; it can negatively affect the students’ personalities.
Wearing a school uniform is one of a big obstacle or negative affect towards a child’s self expression. Children are more self-expressive and artistic than adults, especially if they are high school students. The clothes students wear are students’ way of self-expression, and school uniforms do not allow students to demonstrate their individuality. Research shows that students who were forced to wear school uniforms were more likely the ones that wore makeup earlier than their peers. But the ones who later in life to use more extreme accessories to alter their fashion such as short skirts, mohawk, piercing, and so on.
Children look different to express different outlooks. It helps them to tolerate and accept the different lifestyles that they are surrounded by. This is very important because just one country can be represented by so many different countries, cultures, religions, and ethnicities. Therefore, students should be able to dress to their liking because you never know of their personal lives. A lack of tolerance will be caused if we have to wear uniforms.
Lastly, uniforms have to be paid for. In addition, to the fees of school that we already have to pay as high school students. Money that most people don’t have. We have enough drop-outs as it is. School uniforms may cost significant sums of money, so some parents cannot afford to buy the required clothes for their children. Not enabling school uniforms allows parents with lower incomes to be satisfied about their children’s appearance. It’s just to much to handle; remembering The Economic Crisis of 2008.
