White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack
Tim Wise on White privilege
After watching 1 video and reading another essay I felt very informed of the situation that is still going on about this topic. In the article White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack is about the hidden privileges of being Caucasian. The author explains how many whites are oblivious to these hidden tools and benefits that get them to the top because they are raised and moulded not to see them. I feel like no one should have power based on the color of your skin. Everyone is the same and you can’t blame all white people because they usually turn out how you’re raised. These unequal opportunities have created a never ending problem then won’t be solved most likely in my eyes. Something I noticed was during the news coverage for the Virginia Tech shootings; the media and public underlined the fact that the gunman's ethnicity was Korean. Then it was followed by an apology from the Korean government and a backlash towards all Asians. In the Columbine shootings, no one underlined the gunman’s' race as a factor of their actions or target others of their ethnicity which was white and wrong. This article is sad because it truly shows the realistic view of the everyday life here in the U.S. In the movie Tim Wise on White privilege there I felt informed of the overall factors. Politicians often talk about issues like poverty, housing, education, and healthcare, but they rarely connect them to the role that racism plays in the United States. I really don’t have much to say on the video. I actually want to reflect on how racism needs to stop. I see a video on all of these mini stories on how they or their family was racist at some point in their life. Every story that had an African American as a maid usually got used like a slave instead of a normal maid.
