The film, “What a Girl Wants”, is about the way the media influences teenage girls about sexuality. In the beginning of the film, several teenage girls express what they want to be in life. Some desire to be attractive, popular, and sexy like Britney Spears and Mandy Moore. Others express the desire to be dancers, teachers or athletes. They also express how pop figures today influence them and their peers in a number of ways. They notice that they are extremely thin and usually dressed in a provocative manner. What they see most is how the man relates to the woman in today’s pop culture. Men are always attracted to the thinnest and most beautiful women. This is what the girls say they see in school and on TV. One 11 year-old girl was saying how she feels pressure to be thin, be pretty and to have sex as soon as possible to get it over with.

In the end of the movie, one girl makes the statement that it is in the hands of the media to stop stressing sexual aspects in commercials, movies and television programs. This will lessen the stress teenagers, both male and female, have towards becoming sexually active. The media can actually emphasize other meaningful activities and attitudes for young people to see.

Chapter 10 gives an in-depth description of sexuality and culture today across the world. Sexually transmitted diseases is one negative affect of promiscuity among people of all ages. Many of the sexual dysfunctions there are could be caused by what the media has provided to all of us.
