What to Expect When You Are Expecting: It’s Not Always What You Expect
Books, films, and TV shows have always painted this picture that pregnancy and childbirth has a set of scripts on how it should play out but in reality every woman is different so each woman will have different experiences. In the film, What to Expect When You’re Expecting depicts the ups and downs of pregnancy from conception all the way to childbirth. It was released in 2012 by Lionsgate. The story follows 5 couples on their journey to parenthood. Jules is a personal trainer who is expecting with her dance partner Evan. Wendy is the owner of a breast feeding store. Her and her Husband, Gary, have been trying to conceive for a long time and finally succeed. Much to their surprise, Gary’s father, Ramsey, and his trophy with are expecting twins as well. Holly and Alex are not able to have children so they decide to adopt. Then there is Rosie who gets knocked up by a one night stand with Marco.
One aspect that is similar amongst majority of women is that there are 3 stages of pregnancies. In this film, you see every aspect of each trimester. The first trimester is the first stage of pregnancy. The woman will have morning sickness, enlarged tender breasts, and undergo other physical changes. When Wendy suspects she is pregnant due to noticeable changes of her body and she immediately takes a test to confirm her suspicions. During the second trimester, women often begin to feel unattractive due to the dramatic changes their body is undergoing. Jules struggles the most with this because she is a personal trainer for a TV show that helps obese individuals lose weight. She once says “I'll help people get thin while I get fat”.
