What should be done about identity theft?
Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the whole world. It happens when someone steals your personal information and uses it without your permission. With the development of the new technique on the internet, it is more basic that people using e-mail or online trading platform to substitute the old way of communication. It supposed to make things faster. However, it might come with the risk of phishing theft that hackers may stole your information then uses for unethical or illegal activities. So how to dealing with the identity theft and who should be responsible for the protecting the public from online identity thefts are becomes much important issue that we have to facing with. E-mails are one of the popular communication methods in today. As the example on the textbook, it is quite a possible that receiving an e-mail message request to verify your Social Security Number and personal information from your online banking account. It could be a great way for hackers to contain your information and use for invasion of your account. Take myself as an example, last year I received an e-mail about renew insurance, and then I process payment through a link from the email. And my account got frag at the same time, there are $500 transferred to another account without my permission. Even the bank transfers my money back, but it could be good evidence that can indicate the risk of online transactions. In addition, online shopping has become ubiquitous throughout the U.S.-66% of the online American population has bought something through the channel in 2007 (Wood). When shopping online, customer has to provide their home address and personal information to the supplier thought internet.
