9/19/13 My Banking & Problem-Posing Concept of My Education Paulo Friere wrote an informative essay on the concepts of education. Which explain the Problem- posing and the Banking concept was. Throughout my high school years as a student , I have experienced both the “Banking” and the “ Problem-Posing” concepts of education. Friere said “The 'banking' concept of education, knowledge is gifted bestowed by those who consider themselves knowledgeable upon those whom they consider to know nothing.”(friere 1.) I think the banking concept is the teachers knows everything and the students know nothing. My personal experience with the “banking” concept can relate to an issue I had in my geometry class, health class, and in english class in high school. In geometry class my teacher gave me math problems on fractions. I didn't know how to solve fractions. I only knew how to solve fractions in my own way. I showed my teacher how I solved fractions, but he did not wan t it that way. He wanted me to do the problems his way that he knew. Freire said, “The teacher talks and the student listen-meekly.” (friere2.) I was listening to him, but I wasn't really listening to the way he wanted the problems to be solved. In my health class, Mrs.Glass gave me an assignment on HIV. I didn't even know how HIV can be transported from one body to another. I actually learned something knew from my teacher. She gave me facts on HIV, but I learned about HIV online. She told me everything online is not true, it's made of bullshit sometimes. A teacher is there to teach and I’m there to memorize .Teachers are view as knowing everything and students know nothing. Mohabir 2 In my english class, I had to write a essay. I received a C plus on my essay. My teacher did not like my format the way I wrote it. He told me he could not understand it very clearly about what my essay was about. He wanted the essay in his format that he learned. I did it his way and got a A plus. I learned from my teacher and I did not know nothing. Friere said, “Problem-posing” education, responding to the essence of consciousness –intentionality- rejects communiqués and embodies communications.”(friere6). I think the “problem –posing” concept is the teachers and students come together to work with each other. My personal experience with the “problem-posing” concept I can relate to an issue I had in my math class and history class in my high school. In my math class, I really needed help from my teacher. I had a test coming up in a week, that was assigned out of nowhere. The math problems he went over will be on the test. I really did not understand any of the math problems. I asked him for help, he recommended me, and said “there is no time for that at the moment ,and to email him the problem.” I did email him and he replied. He told me to come an hour before class starts. He went over some of the math problems. It helped me a lot. Freire said, “Problem-posing education does not and cannot serve the interests of the oppressor.”(friere11.) I don’t think this statement is true because in a “problem-posing” education system the teacher is not there to oppress you but rather help you. I was in math class, when Mr. Khan came up to me and said to me “nobody will make you become something in the future.” I know I’m the responsible one for my education. I'm the only person to get out this class to move on to the next level. If I pass and learn. My teacher gave me some extra credit work for me to pass the classwith a B. He is guiding me to pass the class and push me to get me there. He believes in me that I can pass if I keep learning and understandinf the curriculum. I received a A on my grade sheet. My teacher was proud of me and could not believe it that I passed. Mohabir 3

In my History class, my teacher Mrs.Miller teaches me by giving assignments online. The website is Castlelearning, which really helps me because I understand the course more. She gives us extra credit if we do more assignments. This helps me boost up my grade. Mrs. Miller gives me good advice to do the extra assignment, so that I can review and get the course threw my head. Her review has helped me a lot to get a good grade. She would teach the course ,make sure I learn, and will review it before a test . She even takes her time to help me out if I didn’t understand something after the class. Her teaching methods is really good that it gets threw my head and will stay in my head. In conclusion, I've explained the “banking” concepts and” Problem-Posing” concepts in my high school years. I can relate some of my decisions to freire statements. These concepts are related to me because it has happened to me. The “banking” and “problem-posing” concepts of education are a good thing for my education. The teachers give me rules and expectations for my own benefit because their guiding me to prepare myself, prepare me for the future, and work on different skills of learning. The teachers works with me to do better and learn from it. They work with me like were one big family. I learned from them and they learned from me. They know everything and I know nothing.

    Last week, I read an article called the banking concept of education which is written by Paulo Freire, a Brazilian author who contributed to the world greatly as an educator and influenced the field of education. What is banking concept? The banking concept is an example to describe a method that students are regarded as a container and to be filled with different kinds of information and knowledge by teachers. What the students can do is just accept the things that they learned and memorize it. Freire demonstrates that the students are regarded as a bank and teachers “deposit” the knowledge into them.
