What it means to me (respect)

“Men are respectable only as they respect” – Ralph Waldo Emerson This quote to me means that you can only expect to receive as much respect at you are willing to give. If you show no respect to the people around you then you should not expect them to show it to you. The way I see it respect it earned not handed out like candy. If a person constantly talks down to his or her peers then they will not respect you. If you show people respect then they would be willing to follow you anywhere because they know that you believe in them. When you always talk down to someone or treat them like they are incapable of doing a job then they will not give you the respect that you want. Respecting someone is all about knowing how, when, where. How is about know how to approach a person. When is about when is the right time to approach a person. Lastly is where to approach a person. If you looking for the dictionary definition of the word “respect” it is as follows: a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities or achievements. To be respected you must be admired in some way whether it is for your abilities, achievements or even qualities. If there is nothing to admire then there is no on to respect according to the definition. Your abilities make you a leader, you achievements make you knowable but if you don’t have the good qualities that make people want to listen then you really have nothing. I can’t speak for everyone but I can speak for myself and I know that I would want to follow, admire, yet alone respect a man or woman who belittled me. Belittling, talking at are all qualities that can ultimately give someone a reason not to respect you. Those are all qualities that I don’t ever want to have because experiencing them I know that I don’t want to make people feel like they are worth nothing. These are just my opinions on what respect means to me. They military has its own rules...
