Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. It isn’t just the study of pathology, weakness and damage. It is also the study of strength and virtue. Psychology’s historical roots are in the natural sciences of biology and philosophy. The founding father of psychology is Wilhelm Wundt. He is so important because he founded the first psychology laboratory in 1879 at the University of Leipzig. His key focus was on identifying the structures of the human mind and he studied introspection. His first known experiment was measuring the time lag between the instant a person heard a sound and the moment he/she pressed a telegraph key to signal having heard it.
The APA is the American Psychological Association. Professional organizations represent the different disciplines (fields and sub-fields) in psychology. A person can tell the difference between one psychologist and another based on their discipline. A psychologist receives graduate training in psychology and they either pursue a Ph.D (Doctor of Philosophy) or a Phy.D. (Doctor of Psychology). A psychiatrist is a physician that has a medical degree and has specific training in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses. Psychiatrists can also write prescriptions, which a psychologist generally cannot do.
“Psychology is empirical” means that knowledge of psychology should be acquired by observation. The purpose of using the scientific method in psychology is to address research questions. The purpose of thinking critically about psychological research is to avoid overgeneralizing based on little information, distinguish between group results and individual needs, look for answers beyond a single study, avoid attribution causes where none have been found, and consider the source of psychological information.
