Making films relevant to today’s culture is a key factor to their success because it gives people something they can related to and identify with. If you have a personal connection to the topic of a film then not only are you more likely to be interested in it and want to go see it but it will more than likely end up being one of your favorites so you'll recommend it to friends and family and maybe when it gets released on DVD you'll rent it or even buy it. Filmmakers need to choose topics that appeal to the public because that is how they make more money. Television and movies are a part of our everyday life and therefore their relationship to culture is on that is ongoing and has a constant significant effect on one another. While films are often a reflection of today’s society, changes in culture are often a result of something seen on television or in a movie. For example, our hairstyles, speech patterns, and clothing styles are all greatly influenced by things we’ve seen in a movie or on our favorite…
Popular Culture: “popular culture refers to the beliefs and practices, and the objects through which they are organized, that are widely shared among a population. This includes folk beliefs, practices and objects generated in the political and commercial centers. It includes elite cultural forms that have been popularized as well as popular forms that have been elevated to the museum tradition.” (M&S, 3-4)…
Deanna Sellnow clearly explains the idea of popular culture in her article “What is Popular Culture and Why Study It?”. Popular culture is a very difficult concept to understand. After reading Sellnow’s article however, pop culture is simply just how people’s lives should apparently be. People watch television shows and see the families and think thats how their family should be or they see the actor’s actions and think thats how they should act as well. Popular culture is just an assumption of how people should act, think, or believe. The TV show Modern Family is a perfect example of popular culture persuasion. The title itself makes viewers think that that is how families should be because it is apparently a modern family.…

Culture is what defines a group of people, normally by: ethnicity, religion, beliefs, food, music, art, clothing, entertainment, and sometimes-generalized characters. Popular Culture is the forever changing trends, attitudes, ideas, forms of art, types of music, foods, perspectives, fitness, fashions, technologies, and overall specific themes that take place and are main stream within a culture. Popular culture is defined as the ideas, interests, attitudes, etc. that are prominent among the majority of people, not just a specific group. With new developments in media and communications, such as the telephone and mass media, it was much easier for people to spread ideas across larger areas. As more people in an area began to have access to the same ideas, a popular culture began to emerge. Modernization, which was especially prominent in cities, also contributed to popular culture by allowing for the mass production of and wide-spread access to the same forms of products and entertainment.…
Popular culture includes television, the Internet, radio, and any other form of media. Although pop culture is indeed invasive, it can be beneficial by connecting people to the world by informing us on social, economical, and political issues, as well as current events. Without the Internet, television or radio, the world would not have found out about the government shutting down so quickly, nor would we have followed the presidential election so closely. Therefore, children can be educated on many subjects through the media without it impacting them in a negative way. Children can get a sense of how the adult world functions, and learn just by watching television, reading on the Internet, or simply listening to the radio. Pop culture in this sense helps people stay knowledgeable of everything going on in the world.…

Mass culture also known as popular culture, represent products that are of mass consumption. This is in contrast to High culture in western society as a standardised formulaic approach to selling products to a large market. The difference being high culture represents work created with artistic integrity and not solely for the purpose of mass consumption. It also takes the ideologies that the market the corporations are selling to are willing to purchase products with similar structures and repetitive aspects and focusing on the surface elements over depth “Mass culture is imposed from above. It is fabricated by technicians hired by businessmen; its audience are passive consumers, their participation limited to the choice between buying and not buying” (Macdonald, 1957, p.60). This being mainly in the form of films and television programs at a time when technology had begun advancing and mass manufacture and distribution of items became cheap to produce to a large market. It often also relies on high culture in the production of material. “Extracting [high cultures] riches and putting nothing back. Also as [mass culture] develops, it begins to draw on it’s own past, and some of it evolves so far away from high culture as to appear quite disconnected from it.”(Macdonald, 1957, p.60) Mass culture has…

Popularity is a social phenomenon that dictates who or what is best liked, sometimes referred to as in vogue. Through peer influence, target objects can quickly skyrocket in how pervasive they are in society. The more pervasive something is, the more people have access to it. Since popularity is judged in a social context, the more people who support or know something or someone, the more popular it will then be judged. Interpersonally, people can alter their appearance to change how others perceive them, causing popularity to increase or decrease in the form of individual likability or group consensus. – (Wikipedia)…
