History of hypnosis
It is not known how long ago hypnosis started, but hypnosis has been used for a hundred of years.
Accient Egyptians and Hebrew , Shamans and whitch healers used hypnosis to treat themselves and their patients.
In 18th century Franz Mesmer – a medical doctor from Vienna used hypnosis. He is remembered for a term “mesmerism” which described a process of inducing the trance with using his hands and magnets on people.
Scottish surgeon James Braid was the first person who used word hypnos – which means sleep in greek . He realised later, that hypnotic state is not sleeping and tried to change it to monoeidism but original name got stuck.
When he first witnessed hypnotism in 1841 he wasn’t very impressed. He thought there was some magic involved in hypnosis. When he witnessed it second time he become more interested in the subject and started his own investigations about this subject and become a supporter of hypnosis.
He stated that cures or healing was not made through magnetism but through suggestions.
Another famous person from history of hypnosis is doctor James Esdaile. He successfully used hypnosis in around 300 operations in two hospitals in India around 1840.
Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud is best known for his theories about subconscious mind. He published a seminal clinical text Studies in hysteria which promoted a new approach in psychotherapy .He did not use hypnosis in his medical practice because he did not believe that he can cure the patients permanently during hypnotherapy.
In 19th century doctor Emile Coue formulated the Law of suggestions. He is best known for frase:
“Every day in every way I am getting better and better” He prescribed this slogan to his patients to repeat every night before going to bed 20-30 times.
In early 20th century Milton Ericson – psychologist and psychiatrist used different methods in hypnotherapy which is known as Ericksonian hypnotherapy. He used informal approach and patterns with his patients.
What is hypnosis?
Hypnotic stage is something between waking and sleeping. In dream like state where the person experience extreme relaxation.
Hypnosis is relaxed state of mind and body in which we can create a positive healthy solutions to our issues without any side effects.
During our life we create a behaviour – almost habits how we react to situations in our life. Hypnosis uses power of mind to change such behaviour, thoughts and believes that we have created.
Using hypnosis allows us to reprogram our subconscuious mind to change our behaviour, gives ourselves new healthy approach,natural process that uses our own healing abilities . It is natural, permanent and healthy solution to our problems.
By making a positive suggestions to ourselves or to our client we can alter our or clients feelings, thoughts and behaviour in a specific positive way.
In the state of mental relaxations, inner experiences – images, memories, feelings could be called also a trance.
Trance is absolute state of relaxation where our subconscious mind is open to receive positive suggestion made by a therapist.
It is important to mention that during hypnosis or trance the client is conscious, aware and in control throughout the session. The client is free and aware of any action at any time during the hypnosis. Some people are sceptical about hypnosis because they think they will lose control and hypnotherapist will make them do something they don’t want to do.
Nobody can be hypnotised against their will.
Psychological a physical benefits of hypnosis
There is a proven link between our state of mind and our physical health.
When we are in state of hypnosis we feel very relaxed mentally and physically. Our heart rate and blood pressure decrease because we are in relaxed state.
