What is Culture? Why is it important? Is there only one culture? Well, ‘Culture’ is the characteristics of a particular group of people, who practice the same language, food, clothing, religion, architecture, social habits, music and arts. Culture is important because it is a way of life that is based on beliefs and values of particular social groups. There are many different cultures around the world that are being practiced as an importance to their society. In this essay, I will be talking more in depth about culture, the importance of it and the importance to society. However, I have chosen three different cultures which I will be talking about their language, food and clothing. The three cultures that I’ll talk about are Greek, Chinese and Indian. Culture is the abilities, ideas and behaviours that people have developed to become members of society. It is learned over time and shared by groups of people to practice the knowledge of language, food, clothing, arts, laws and customs. Culture is important because certain particular social groups or organizations follow their own beliefs and values. Values are an aspect of culture because it is being shared by standards of what would be right and morally acceptable in their culture. There are many different cultures practiced by various countries across the world. All cultures have their own beliefs and value which are practiced and there is no one way of following them. One’s religion may be different but culture wise they may follow the same as another who is practicing another religion. This is a way of interacting with one another even though you practice a different religion. In society, you share the same culture because it develops and evolves the social framework.
Language is important in a culture because it is part of a person's identity. Language is a key factor that distinguishes some cultures from others. In Greek Culture, 98 % of the population speak Greek officially, 1-8 % of the population speak Macedonian which is the largest minority. The other languages that are spoken in Greece are Albanian and Turkish which is spoken by Muslim communities. In the Chinese Culture, there are seven main languages which are Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka, Wu, Min, Xiang and Gann. In the Indian Culture, they have at least 28 states and 7 territories; which each has at last one official language. Some of the common languages spoken are Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Telegu.
The food is another part of culture and each have different ways of following them with various taste and ways of cooking food. In the Greek Culture, food and wine is what they are known for good quality and amazing taste. The most common meats in Greece are pork, lamb, beef, goat, chicken and veal . Also for their vegetables they commonly eat potatoes, onions, olives, and lettuce. In the Indian Culture, they are known for assortment of dishes and it's liberal use of herbs and spices. Many of the Hindus are vegetarians. In the Hindu culture they usually eat with their hands. This culture is mainly know for their curries, roti's, dosa's and naan. In the Chinese Culture, people eat with chopsticks. They are known for eating raw vegetables in healthy eating habits, herbal teas and many different specially of food. Some foods that they are known for are chilli chicken, fried bananas, seafood and the most commonly food sushi.
Clothing may be colourful in one's culture and just pain in others. They have variety of materials and styles of wearing them. In the Greek Culture, people back home wore simple garments that were draped over their bodies. The Chilton were simple outfits made from one piece of rectangle of fabric. In the Chinese Culture, Chinese people mostly wore silk materials. There are three main types of traditional Chinese clothing which are Pienfu, Changpao and Shenyi.
