What is American?

      The world, the country, and the city we live in are directly shaped by our past. One would believe that through the course of time, and with trial and error, that we not as civilians, not as a nation, but simply as human beings, would learn from our past.
      While riding the train this morning, I was able to read an article from the New York Times directly from my IPhone. The headline read: “Arizona Orders Tucson to End Mexican-American Studies Program.” With a hint of curiosity and a touch of resentment, I clicked on the article. The article, though “unbiased”, spoke mainly about a high school Latino Cultural Studies class that The Tucson Unified School District had declared illegal by the State of Arizona “even while similar programs for Black, Asian and American Indian students have been left untouched”. Officials believe that the matter in which the course is taught may have undertones of rebellion. Tom Horne, newly elected Attorney General, was the main leader for campaigning on implementing the House Bill 2281, which challenged all Ethnic Studies courses in Arizona. The Bill that passed was implemented to protect the government and the individual. The class was declared illegal on accusations of propaganda and brainwashing. Mr. Horne believes that the text used and the course work given indirectly and inappropriately teaches Latino youth that they are being mistreated.
      As a reader, there is some truth and understanding to why some people may believe that the law that was passed will benefit society, however, given what has been going on these past years in Arizona, I can see how, socially, it may seem that Latinos are being treated unfairly.
      Bill 1070 gives law enforcement the “warrantless” right to arrest any Arizona resident under the suspicion [“suspicion” being the operative word] of being an “alien” in this country. In simple terms, this... [continues]
