There are a lot of causes for the English Civil War happening. All of them were to do with Charles and the four main things money, religion, power and Charles’ mistakes. One big cause was Charles personality and his belief in the Divine rights of Kings which meant he believed he was the only one who could make the decisions/laws and he didn’t want help or restrictions form Parliament. Few people could have predicted that the civil war, which started in 1642, would have ended with the public execution of Charles. In the war Charles biggest rivalry was Oliver Cromwell, who was one of the people who signed Charles’ death warrant. Charles was arrogant, conceited and a strong believer in the divine rights of kings. He had witnessed the damaged relationship between his father and Parliament, and considered that Parliament was entirely at fault as he found it difficult to believe that a king could be wrong. Money was one of the causes of the Civil War. Money was a cause because in 1635 Charles ordered that everyone in the country should pay Ship Money. This was historically a tax paid by coastal towns and villages to pay for the upkeep of the navy. The logic was that coastal areas most benefited from the navy's protection so therefore had to pay an amount of money. Charles decided that everyone in the kingdom benefited from the navy's protection and that everyone should pay, which caused much disagreement and anger from the people. It caused anger because Charles had changed a Law/tax which shouldn’t have been changed as it was only the people around the coast who should have to pay as that’s where the Navy protected most. Another financial reason that caused the English Civil War was that Charles bought a lot of expensive paintings. We know this because where he lived there were a lot of paintings hung on the walls. This was one of the reasons that may have caused the English Civil War because Charles spent money on his own comfort and pleasure rather than spending it on his country/army or saving it. This showed his people that he wasn’t capable of saving money or putting his country first which angered a lot of people. This ties in with the fact that Charles sets a bad example as it shows he spends money and doesn’t save and also that he doesn’t think of long term effects of spending the money. Basically he gets what he wants which gives a very bad impression of him; also instead of ‘wasting’ the money he could have used it for his army or other things which are more important than paintings. Power was also a cause for the English Civil War as Charles thought he didn’t have enough power and Parliament had too much. We know this because Charles closed down Parliament because he thought they had too much power over him and the running of the country. Although Charles actually had too much power, he believed strongly in the divine rights of Kings and thought himself as a ‘mini God’ which therefore meant he did not want the help of Parliament. This caused much chaos as because Charles thought this he decided to close down Parliament for 11 years! When Charles finally reopened Parliament they wanted to try and restrict him from being able to close them again which annoyed Charles and may have caused the Civil War. This links in with the fact that about Charles being full of himself and thinking that he was chosen by God to be King and anyone that disobeyed him should be heavily punished. This belief of Charles’ was called the Divine rights of Kings. The next cause fits into two categories which are Financial and Power; it is the fact that Charles lost a war with France. We know this because Charles army was weaker than the French’s which therefore meant they lost. This may have caused the English Civil war because Charles has now lost any good relationship with France and wasted a lot of money paying for the upkeep of the army. This would
