The short story Neighbours written by Tim Winton depicts a young newly married couple moving into a new suburb filled with Neighbours that were different culturally and socially friendly. This is a change from life living in the ‘outer suburbs where good neighbours were seldom seen and never heard.’ They must either begin to understand new culture or be faced with not belonging. The short story is written in third person without any names giving a less personal, narrated style of text.…

"Love your neighbor as yourself" was part of the Old Testament Law (Leviticus 19:18) that was sacred to Jesus' kinfolk, the Jews. But, many people thought a "neighbor" meant only their fellow Jews. One day a lawyer asked Jesus, "And just who is my neighbor?" Jesus told the story of The Good Samaritan to answer his question in a way we can never forget:…

I love to meet new people and connect with them. I have friends from different religion and cultures and I love to learn about their lifestyles, customs and beliefs. In my opinion, friendliness involves greeting strangers with a smile, connecting with people effectively, always paying attention to the people while having a conversation and responding to them appropriately. There are lots of examples of friendliness around us. Greeting the checkout person at the grocery store, engaging in conversation with the person in line next to you, offering to help a person in need of help, smiling at a stranger or someone you know, offering a ride to your neighbor, whose car is in the repair shop might be some of the good examples of friendliness. I can share a story from my personal experience related to friendliness. There was an old man who used to live next to our house. He had two daughters who lived in abroad and his wife had passed away. So, he lives all alone by himself. Once I offered him to help him clean his apartment, he happily accepted my offer. Then, we cleaned his apartment together and he thanked me for being so kind to him. The characteristic of friendliness goes a long way to promote happiness and peace in any situation or relationship. It fosters understanding, respect and justice. It creates a sense of community and caring. We all need the feel to be wanted and loved and friendliness helps with…

Born in a middle-class Christian family from South India, the strict traditional values helped to embed the concept of service through family and friends who taught me trust, respect, integrity, and responsibility for my education and beliefs. One of my major spiritual values that kindled the concept of service within me is “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” which is found in the Bible. At an early age I started to practice this concept by not only self-respect for myself but mainly treating others with respect. Individuals may build their moral values from listening to their parents, grandparents, religious beliefs, friends, books, their local societal values and even watching television. Moral values and…

Moreover, I always try to be courteous. I think being well mannered and considerate is a key factor of courtesy and I do my best not to hurt others’ feelings or annoy them. It is also important to be honest, especially with people you have known for a long time. Lies turn out to be lies after time. It takes a lot of effort and time to build trust, but it can be broken even with the smallest lie. In terms of honesty, I try to remember the quote saying ‘Characters build slowly, but it can be torn down with great swiftness.’ I know how fragile trust can be, so I put honesty as one of my top instrumental values. I am of belief…

If you perform an Altruistic act towards a member of your family would be acting within Hamilton’s kin selection theory (1960s). The kin selection theory which states that you are much more likely to perform an altruistic act if the person you are helping is a member of your family. An example of this is recently in Melbourne there was a wall collapse. Three people died as a result of this incident; a woman in her thirties and an eighteen and nineteen-year-old siblings, the older brother and his sister. The older woman died upon impact, as did the brother, but only after he shielded his sister from the collapsing wall. His sister also died later in hospital. (ABC News, 1st April 2013) This is an example of the kin selection theory. Instead of doing what benefited himself, he tried to save his sister, despite it having dire consequences. This would be considered an act of altruism as it did not benefit him, and in this case even had negative consequences,…
