What are the Positive and Negative Effects of Mass Media on the Health of Modern Day North Americans?
Mass Media’s Role on Health Mass media, by communicating with large amounts of people, can have a huge impact on the public’s knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours. Firstly, body image has a huge contribution on public when receiving mixed messages through mass media. Second, mental health has become an issue by poorly influencing self-esteem. Third, physical health has been portrayed poorly in media by promoting unhealthy habits that can become addictive as having more immediate plessure. Fourthly, media has implimated ways in which it can also promote positive outcomes of health. Mass media plays a positive and negative role on health of modern day North Americans. Making health influential on all North Americans.
Body Image
Many modern day North Americans have a daily concern with being uncomfortable in their own body with many pressures from mass media. Mass media is sending out mixed messages, advertising both junk food and a so called perfect body image influencing how men and women look at themselves. For some getting thin becomes an obsession. Ironically, there are more obese teens than ever before because of lifestyle choices of eating junk food more often than fruits and vegetable.(Jane D. Brown, 2002) As well as, having more distractions inside with electronic types of media that keep many North Americans from getting the recommended amount of exercise needed. The media is playing a role here in two ways.
Firstly, is the act of attending media, because it requires no physical movement involved (Jane.D Brown, 2002). Having no contribution to the health aspect of one’s life then contributes to the result of weight gain. Many children and adults spend endless amounts of time sitting in front of some type of an electronic device screen. Those for example that sit in front of the television tend to consume snack foods that are typically high in fat and sugars. “People see an average of 12 to 21 food ads per day (4400–7600 ads per year), yet

    In an article written by Colleen Thompson and Dr. Lauren Muhlheim, it is emphasized that more than just a few individuals in society struggle with the same issue of not being able to fit the ‘ideal figure’: “In North America, men and women are given the message at a very young age that in order to be happy and successful, they must be thin and fit...     In the United States today, obesity has become an enormous problem. In the last three decades, the number of people overweight has increased dramatically. A study done by the Centers of Disease Control showed that since 1980, one third of the adult population has become overweight. America is the richest but also the fattest nation in the world and our obese backsides are the butt of jokes in every other country (Klein 28). The 1980s were a time when Americans suddenly started going crazy over dieting, jumping onto treadmills, and buying prepackaged non-fat foods. However, while all of that was going on, the number of obese Americans began to increase. According to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 58 million people in our country weigh over 20 percent of their body’s ideal weight. The article “Fat Times” states, “If this were about tuberculosis, it would be called an epidemic” (Elmer-Dewit 58). The eating habits of society have steadily become more harmful and have started to produce gluttonous children, over-indulgent adults, and a food industry set too much on satisfying our appetites.…

    Alison Motluk believes that people who are obese shouldn 't be to blame for their obesity. (562). Motluk claims that “In 1992 about 13 percent of Americans were clinically obese...ten years later that figure skyrocketed to 22 percent...” (562). Many other countries such as the UK, Australia, and many other Western countries are following the United States lead in the obese epidemic, which is seen as one of the developed world 's biggest public-health problems. (563). Motluk claims that people who are obese can 't actually be blamed for it because the culture in the United States promotes obesity which makes unhealthy eating the default option. (563). Motluk quotes Martin Brinks, a psychologist at Duke University 's Diet and Fitness Center, when she states that calorie rich foods are much more easier to obtain than ever before. (563). This is proven by the fact that most of the average American 's food budget is spent on food that is eaten outside of the home, most of which is high in fat and calories. (563). Portion sizes are larger than they used to be, making the consumer want to eat more. (563). In the 1960s a McDonald 's meal of a hamburger, fries, and a twelve-ounce coke contained about 590 calories but now a quarter-pounder with cheese, super sized fries, and a coke contains around 1,550 calories. (563). This really goes to show how much of a change that America has done when considering diet. Motluk provides a valid argument that children are not receiving enough physical activity to balance the amount of calories that they are consuming. (563).     How does the media influence our body image? In what forms, does the media influence our perceptions about our body? These were the two questions that I asked myself in order to do the research paper and the panel discussion. In my opinion, I would agree that the media does influence and promote women and men to believe that the culture's standards for body image are ideal. Hence, the phrases, "thin is in" and "the perfect body" are two examples of "eye-catching" headlines that I observed in many women magazines. I learned that the media influences us through television, fashion and health magazines, music videos, film, commercials, and various other advertisements. Sadly, as a result, this repeated exposure, the "thin" ideal, can lead many young girls in triggering eating disorders, depression, low self-esteem, stress, and suicide.     Eleven million women in the United States suffer from eating disorders- either self-induced semi-starvation (anorexia nervosa) or a cycle of bingeing and purging with laxatives, self-induced vomiting, or excessive exercise (bulimia nervosa) (Dunn, 1992). Many eating disorder specialists agree that chronic dieting is a direct consequence of the social pressure on American females to achieve a nearly impossible thinness. The media has been denounced for upholding and perhaps even creating the emaciated standard of beauty by which females are taught from childhood to judge the worth of their own bodies (Stephens & Hill, 1994). To explore the broader context of this controversial issue, this paper draws upon several aspects on how the media influences young women's body image. This paper examines an exploration of the prevalence and the source of body dissatisfaction in American females and considers existing research that presents several important aspects regarding the nature of the connection between advertising and body dissatisfaction.
