western summit
Western Summit Constructors/Midterm Paper Western Summit Constructors, Inc. is an environmental contracting company that targets both industrial and municipal clients. The company was established in 1984 in the rocky mountain area and quickly grew to build projects all over the country. In 2008 Western Summit was purchased by Kiewit Corporation, one of the largest and most premier international contracting groups. The Western Summit division of Kiewit specializes in building water and waste water treatment plants. I have worked for this company since April of 2013 and have been a Kiewit employee, through multiple subsidiaries, for last 3 years. I chose to interview this company I work for to gain a further sense of the western summit culture and take the opportunity to learn more about the different functional areas of the business.
Supply and Demand
One hundred percent of the company’s revenue comes from project operations. The Estimating department is responsible for finding potential clients, researching projects and bidding for the job. In the bid process there are anywhere from four to ten other contractors competing for the work. A typical plant project has an average of 5 other contractors bidding; pipeline has an average of 8. Western summit estimators participate in fifty to one hundred bids per year, five to six percent of the time the company is awarded the job. In the summer of 2013 western summit was the lowest bidder for three consecutive pipeline bids and was awarded all three jobs; this makes seven awarded jobs this year. Though Western Summit bids for work in multiple regions of the country most of the awarded jobs are here in the rocky mountain area.
Business Ethics
Western Summit and its employees hold themselves to a very high degree of integrity and expect the same from clients, subcontractors, and other companies under the Kiewit umbrella. Compliance is taken very seriously in terms of safety, environment, and EEO. This year one of

    1. After reading the case, I would say that the engagement risk the auditors are facing is fairly high. Up until 1999, George Newton, the current CEO/CFO of Northern Frontier Parks, Inc., was responsible for creating the financial statements, which were not being audited or reviewed by anybody. This is an issue because without an audit, there is no way to ensure the company’s financials are being correctly stated. George Newton wanted to base the purchase price of the shares on a multiple of net income, which is concerning because he could’ve been fraudulently reporting the financials of NFP in order to set a favorable price for himself since nobody was auditing his work.…

    Mount Ridge Case Summary

    • 462 Words
    • 2 Pages

Mount Ridge is a utility company specializing in energy production. Four years ago the company’s founder, Garret Levinson, believed that coal would be both the primary fuel for electricity as well as serve as a standardization of efficiency and cost control in the future. He decided to create his company around this idea, and produce energy using coal as a fuel source. Since steam is a byproduct of using coal to create power, Mount Ridge sells the electricity produced to the local utility, and is able to recycle energy by selling the steam to a nearby industrial plant. Not only is this recycling healthier for the environment (as opposed to letting the excess steam go to waste), but it also allows Mount Ridge to cut energy costs in order to gain a competitive advantage in the energy field, a business strategy known as cost leadership. This strategy resulted in commercial success very quickly, and though Mount Ridge is centralized in Kentucky, it has ambitiously chosen to pursue building plants across the Northeast where the demand for cogeneration plants is strong.…

In "A Wilderness Station" the character of Annie Herron is presented through a series of letters and memoirs. These documents tell us some of the events surrounding the death of her husband, Simon. These letters and memoirs are written by different people in Annie's life, such as George Herron (Simon's brother), Reverend McBain, James Mullen, Christena Mullen and by Annie herself. In a memoir published in the Carstairs Argus newspaper Fiftieth Anniversary Edition, George Herron wrote his version of the circumstances of his arrival to Carstairs and he also gives his version surrounding the accidental death of his brother. Annie, on the other hand, gives conflicting stories of the day her husband died. She tells two different versions of what occurred on the day her husband died. She tells Mr. Mullen that she killed her husband when she first arrives at the Gaol and then tells her friend Sadie Johnstone in a letter that her brother-in-law killed Simon. Given these conflicting stories we are unable to determine what really happened to Simon Herron.…
