There are several genres and classifications in which works of art such as films, literature and paintings fall. Among the most popular type of movies is western, famed for the setting mainly concerning the occurrences of the second half of the 19th century (Fujiwara, 2007). In addition, the western movies are usually based in the American old west. The western nature of these films is further shown by the activities of the people who lived during this period who were mainly concerned with the protection of their communities and families. The people of the ‘Wild West’ were well known for their prowess in carrying out conquests on neighboring states and countries (Fujiwara, 2007). Direct justice and the respect for codes of honor characterize western movies. Societies, which lived during the western era, did not have any respect for the formal ways of solving disputes for example through the court of law. It was normal to hear of people being involved in fierce gunfights if any problems or disputes arose. Moreover, a courageous man who is semi-nomadic and in most cases a cowboy usually characterizes these movies. One of the most popular western films is The Outlaw Josey Wales, a film that was produced in 1976. Its setting was based on the period during and after the American Civil war. The movie starred Clint Eastwood who acted as Josey Wales. It was an adaptation of Forest Carter’s novel, which was released in 1973. The book was known as The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales. This film belongs to the western genre of films and movies. It involves the activities of Josey Wales, a farmer from Missouri. A group of pro-union Jayhawkers killed the son and wife of Josey. This sparked a feeling of anger in Josey making him want to seek revenge. Wales gets involved in the American civil war with the desire to exercise revenge on the people who killed his wife and son.
