Role and Function of the Law
Almost everything that we do is governed by some set of rules one way or the other. “Law is a body of rules of action or conduct prescribed by controlling authority, and having legal binding force” (Melvin 2011). Law plays a great role in the successful operation and existence of business and the society that we live in. Laws generally regulate social behavior and social conducts, which leads to a society that operates smoothly, and efficiently. Laws also provide both the business and the society ethical standards, codes of conduct, and expectations. Law has the measures to enforce the rules, and a means to settling disputes and punishing the criminals. Without laws to govern the actions of the society and businesses, society would not be able to function effectively and as results the businesses with not survive. “Modern law in the United States regulating businesses and individuals is generally a combination of constitutional law, statutory law, common law, and administrative (regulatory) law at the federal, state, and local levels (Melvin 2011).” As a business owner, it is important to be knowledge about local and federal laws that applies to each particular business. The dental laboratory industry is regulated by both Board of Dental Examiners and the The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The regulations are set to protect and to ensure public health and safety. For example FDA has the authority to inspect any dental lab manufacturing dental appliances in the United States, registered or unregistered. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration require registration for dental labs that operate overseas, or serve as importer for a foreign laboratory. This is to ensure that the material that are being used in the curse of manufacturing are also FDA approved, and are safe for use within the society.
