A Karnaugh map (K-map) is a pictorial method used to minimize Boolean expressions without having to use Boolean algebra theorems and equation manipulations. A K-map can be thought of as a special version of a truth table .

Using a K-map, expressions with two to four variables are easily minimized. Expressions with five to six variables are more difficult but achievable, and expressions with seven or more variables are extremely difficult (if not impossible) to minimize using a K-map.

Definition - What does Karnaugh Map (K-map) mean?
A Karnaugh map (or K-map) is a graphic means of depicting Boolean functions. K-maps are used to simplify Boolean functions and expressions without using algebra-based Boolean methods.

The Karnaugh map, also known as the K-map, is a method to simplify boolean algebra expressions. Maurice Karnaugh introduced it in 1953 as a refinement of Edward Veitch's 1952 Veitch diagram. The Karnaugh map reduces the need for extensive calculations by taking advantage of humans' pattern-recognition capability. It also permits the rapid identification and elimination of potential race conditions.
The required boolean results are transferred from a truth table onto a two-dimensional grid where the cells are ordered in Gray code, and each cell position represents one combination of input conditions, while each cell value represents the corresponding output value. Optimal groups of 1s or 0s are identified, which represent the terms of a canonical form of the logic in the original truth table.[1] These terms can be used to write a minimal boolean expression representing the required logic.
Karnaugh maps are used to simplify real-world logic requirements so that they can be implemented using a minimum number of physical logic gates. A sum-of-products expression can always be implemented using AND gates feeding into an OR gate, and a product-of-sums expression leads to OR gates feeding an AND gate.[2] Karnaugh maps can also be used to simplify logic

Activity 6.3.2 Logic Gates Introduction A two-valued number system is the basis for all of the powerful computers and electronic devices in the world. Those two values are 0 and 1. Everything in the digital world is based on this binary system. While it seems very simple, the binary system is used to create the logic that dictates the actions of complex and simpler digital systems. But how do processors know what to do with all of those 0s and 1s Gates are used. Gates process the 0s and 1s and react based on how they are designed to function. When many gates are combined, computers can solve complex problems by using the logic set forth by the combination and order of the gates.
