Today, water pollution is considered the main problem on this planet. With 70% of the Earth covered by water, this is a problem of huge proportions. Millions of contributors lead to water pollution. However, there are four major categories of contributors: agricultural, natural, industrial, and municipal. Agricultural contributors originate from animal waste and chemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers farmers dispose of into nearby water sources. Natural water pollutants include volcanic eruptions and earthquakes that leave an unbalanced oceanic floor. Industrial pollutants come from industries directly dumping hazardous and toxic chemicals into water sources. Municipalities play an important role in water pollution. According to expert author Wendy Pan (2010), all city and residential waste is dumped into nearby rivers and oceans.
Although water pollution exists on a global scale, resolving this problem will need to begin at a local level. A management and sustainment plan to alleviate the problem at a local level could also be put in place by all areas affected by water pollution will eventually resolve the problem on a global scale. The management and sustainment plan outlined below is intended for the local community of Lewisville, Texas. After successfully implementing this plan at the local level, plans are to implement it at the county level and then at a state level with hopes of eventually implementing this plan at a national level.
The management and sustainment plan outlined to alleviate local water pollution should take approximately six months. The first step of research has been designated two months. Research will be conducted on all the local water sources and mainly concentrated on the 436,000 acre-foot lake located. Research will include local water pollution measurements and sources to include... [continues]
