Wal-Mart’s effect on America
Shopping for our needs or wants is one of the most important routines in people’s lives. Almost every adult that lives in America shops or has someone else shop for him/her. We all need elements that keep us fulfilled, entertained, and satisfied. However, not many people think about what they are buying, where it came from or how it is affecting other people. Thinking outside the box can be difficult for most people. Most of us focus on the small picture and not the future. Most people want to shop in a place where they can find everything they are looking for, like in a big retail store to save time. Wal-Mart is known for “low prices” and being an all-in-one-store. Not understanding Wal-Mart’s deceiving ads, people are deluded and think that everything being told to them is true. The truth is: Wal-Mart has no or little benefits for its employees, closes down small businesses, and imports their product from overseas.
Many employees have lost their jobs in small businesses, such as retail stores, phone stores, electronic stores, mechanic shops, etc., who were all affected by Wal-Mart. What are those employees to do now? If they want to work the same jobs they once had, their option is Wal-Mart. New employees in Wal-Mart will have to start with low, gradually increasing wages and little or no benefits because they are being pushed to work part-time. It is difficult to become a full-time worker at Wal-Mart. The requirement of a full-time worker in Wal-Mart is to work at least 34 hours a week. However, they force workers to be a part-time by not giving them 5 days a week to work. It is not as easy as it seems working for Wal-Mart; it is a job that requires determination and endurance. Some workers have to multi-task and learn to deal with people that can give them a hard time. Most workers are not as valued as they should be. Low wages and no benefits are not good ways to treat employees who give it their best to help the store succeed.... [continues]
