SUBJECT:Staffing at Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Wal-Mart’s employs 930,000 people domestically and internationally, causing it to be one of the largest employers on the Fortune 500 list. (Course Packet H ADM 2211) However, with decreases in the amount of female employees dropping from 67 to 63 percent, the company seems to be still dealing issues of discrimination with women employees and their promotion. (Course Packet H ADM 2211) * How big is this gender problem?

Employing more women than any other “American company”, Wal-Mart is more likely to face discrimination charges. Even with a previous class action lawsuit scaling 1.6 million past and present employees, Wal-Mart still has not completely dealt with the unresolved issues within the company. (Greenhouse 1) While deeply focused on low prices, Wal-Mart has recently cut 11,200 jobs at its Sam’s Club warehouses in an effort to better manage its stores. (Reuters 1) And without a “centralized employment policies… individual store and district managers, rather than headquarters, make decisions on pay and promotions” has only exacerbated the situation regarding discrimination of women within Wal-Mart.
