ABSTRACT

According to WHO International Travel and Health, the Philippines reported 77,012 dengue cases from January 1 to September 4 of 2010, twice the number of cases reported during the same period last year. Dengue fever is caused by Dengue virus (DENV), a mosquito-borne virus that is prevalent in Philippines, this virus victimize mostly children below the age of 15. In some cases dengue develop into a severe disease called Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever that is fatal and at times deadly. This study attempts to develop a way to prevent Dengue carrying mosquitoes from harming children. The research make used of oregano leaves in making a mosquito repellent candle. Oregano or Oreganum Vulgare is a perennial herb native to Europe, Asian and Mediterranean regions, a highly aromatic plant with a bitter taste that is known for its antioxidant and anti-microbial properties. (Sandhyarani 2009). Oregano’s Main constituents include Carvacrol which is a natural mosquito repellent (Wikipedia). The researchers made an insect repellent candle using oregano oil made from oregano leaves which is known to have a natural insect repellent ability due to its chemical properties and used candle wax to create an insect repellent that is effective and affordable. “Vulgare” Insect Repellent Candle is an all natural insect repellent free from harmful toxins found in commercial repellent lotion that can harm children which enters the body through the absorption of our skin during application. This study found Oregano Oil repels mosquitoes better than traditional chemical repellents like DEET also known as Diethyl-meta-toluamide a harmful but very effective chemical found in commercial insect repellents that is when applied to the skin is absorbed into the bloodstream and becomes another toxic burden to our bodies especially with frequent use.
