My essay is over the disrespect that volunteer firefighters get. All the time we are disrespected and treated like we don’t do anything or we aren’t professional. People see us as untrained and quite frankly idiots. A lot of it is response time no matter how fast we get there they feel that were not there fast enough. I really hope with this essay to change your thoughts on volunteer firefighters.

People’s general perception of volunteer firefighters is that we aren’t professional. Why is this? Volunteer firefighters devote all their time to serving the people of their community. We fight the same fires as paid firefighters and respond to the same calls. Paid firefighters on the other hand get off while volunteers are never off. For example right now while I’m writing this essay I could get a call and have to stop. Once a paid firefighter is off he goes home then relaxes for the next two days. I work, go to school full time, and I have a fiancé all of this and I'm on call 24 hours a day seven days a week and three-hundred and sixty-five days a year. Whether it’s in the morning, afternoon, of the middle of the night if the tones go off I will be there to help whoever needs me.

A lot of people seem to think volunteers are untrained and unprofessional. Well let’s focus on the untrained part. All firefighters paid and volunteer have to meet the same requirements set by the state of Tennessee. There is no wiggle room or anything you have to have these classes they are mandatory. We all have the same minimum set of training requirements. The next point is the unprofessional part. Even as a volunteer department we have standard operating procedures, officers that lead the department, and expectations of how to act out in public and on a scene.
