Chapter 2Voice 1: Janie's grandmother was born during slavery. Black people, and especially women, could not voice their opinions. Nanny always wanted to make a great speech, but no one would listen. He does not give her the chance to speak.|“Janie made her face laugh after a short pause, but it wasn’t too easy. She had never thought of making a speech, and didn’t know if she cared to make one at all. It must have been the way Joe spoke out without giving her a chance to say anything one way or another that took the bloom off things.” Pg. 43| Chapter 6Voice 3: Joe does not allow Janie to talk with the people of the town about Matt Bonner's mule.
