“To improve the quality of out of home care provided to our youngest citizens by modeling quality care, and building a strong community of like minded care givers.” I am the executive director of BK Enterprises which consists of Early Childhood, Youth, and Adult and Senior service programs. In the interest of brevity I will only expound upon the early childhood component of my venture in this paper. The Early childhood component of BK Enterprises includes Our Village Child Development Center (CDC), an award winning, state-of-the-art childcare center serving children from 6 weeks to 12 years; Knox & Associates, an early childhood consulting service and training center; and, Children First!, an early childhood staffing service. I named my childcare center Our Village Child Development Center because of the saying that is often referred to as an Old African Proverb, “It takes a whole village to raise a child”. I believe it to be a reasonable and profound statement regarding our collective social responsibility to society’s youngest members. Furthermore, it corresponds with my memories and experiences as a child when, unlike in today’s society, nearly every adult in our community contributed to the rearing of the neighborhood children, and in my opinion we were much better because of it. Our Village CDC considers the Wisconsin child care regulations as a launching pad and not the ultimate goal. Our aim is to be a nationally recognized child care center. Knox & Associates is a consultant firm designed to provide training and technical assistance to other child care programs, explicitly in the area of systems management. We accomplish our goals through individual program consultations and accompanying recommendations, coaching/mentoring, and ongoing monitoring and follow up.
