Virtual Simulations for Distance Education in Response to Political, Economic, and Environmental Problems
The role of education has always been to provide pupils with the curriculum and hidden curriculum; teaching skills that will prepare them physically, mentally and socially for the world of work in later life. Education itself has become one of the fundamental building blocks of the development and advancement of modern nation-state. Although a strong industrial base, a flourishing agriculture, and prosperous trade are also important, these aspects are entirely dependent on the quality of education of the citizens.
INTRODUCTION
The learning process is a complex cognitive task for both the teachers and the students and it requires tremendous effort from both of them, especially the students. Thus, it is logical to conclude that they need a lot of motivation and concentration to cope with it. In view of this, it is worth considering the technological developments in relation to education. Jones Shoemaker (1998) pointed out that in order to evaluate the sources and impacts for a change in continuing education, political, economic, social, physical, and technology issues need to be considered.
"There is a fast growing area of computer technology, that of computer games, that is extremely appealing to children and adolescents. Common observation life can easily observe that they like computer games. Games are dynamic, intrinsically motivating, and involve high levels of analysis and problem solving. They provide immediate feedback to participants, and mistakes do not result in actually losing assets" (Hood, 1997).
Thus the computer games technology could be used to render educational software that simulates a learning environment that is more motivating and engaging. In this respect, the difficult process of learning could become more entertaining while retaining its academic value.
