Aggravated assaults is when a person is guilty of aggravated assault if he or she attempts to cause serious bodily injury to another or causes such injury purposely, knowingly, or recklessly under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life; or attempts to cause or purposely or knowingly causes bodily injury to another with a deadly weapon. In all jurisdictions statutes punish such aggravated assaults as assault with intent to murder (or rob or kill or rape) and assault with a dangerous (or deadly) weapon more severely than "simple" assaults. (West's Encyclopedia of American Law) However, the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program defines aggravated assault as an unlawful attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury. The UCR Program further specifies that this type of assault is usually accompanied by the use of a weapon or by other means likely to produce death or great bodily harm. Attempted aggravated assault that involves the display of—or threat to use—a gun, knife, or other weapon is included in this crime category because serious personal injury would likely result if the assault were completed. When aggravated assault and larceny-theft occur together, the offense falls under the category of robbery (FBI) The prevalence or pattern of this crime is targeted by the legislation (policy) to cease the individuals who are subjected to deviant behavior; “assault” or inflicting harm when in action. The Face 5 policy is to cease the usage of firearms, specifically illegal ones of the streets to slow the progression of deterrence through crime.

Aggravated assaults need to be addressed through this legislation because it occurs more often than the average being realizes and often goes unreported. When certain acts like aggravated assaults accompanied with firearms go unreported or undetected, it is hard to statistically report crime and the frequency of this crime. It also needs to be addressed because of the usage of the firearms on the streets allows the citizens of Atlanta (FACE 5) to have protection whether it be positive or negative in their possession. Individuals can obtain a weapon that if not documented and not licensed to own, they conceal illegal firearms and when committing crimes, victims are hurt or sometimes fatality occurs due to senseless acts.

The consequences of having illegal firearms due to the policy of FACE 5, is that if found and charged of having an illegal firearm in the possession, not just of aggravated assaults, the individual being charged of that crime can face up to minimal of 5 years in a federal prison. Aggravated assaults are single handedly one of few high risk incidents being reported of crime, alongside of rape, robbery and senseless acts of crime. As mentioned earlier in the introduction, the end result is to pay legal fees that are majority expensive that individuals usually struggle to pay forth. The arrestee has this on their record, so now this action by their personal choice is documented permanently. For a person to make a negative choice on allowing themselves to conceal a weapon, and that it be illegal due to it not being registered or licensed to use and own; can instantly send out a message to another person, possibly a potential victim that there is a chance behind a motivation for crime to occur. The risk in that being a chance of another victimization is every right to want and need to enforce a strict policy to have offenders (felons) reciprocate every move and thought made. Legislation
