Ladies and Gentlemen, the violence on the streets that we hear about almost daily is becoming a very serious problem and it is clear that we, as a society, are too short-sighted, and do not look for the root cause of our problems. We generally tend to think of reactionary solutions, such as more policing and greater punishment, rather than fixing the root causes of the problem.

Mindless vandalism has stabilised in recent years, but prior to this had been increasing at an alarming rate. For decades there has been a sense of pride in Australia about how drunk you got the night before. Indeed, almost everyone believes that if you don’t have at least some memory loss, it’s been a bad night. Perhaps most alarming is that it is now encouraged and expected amongst peers, to the point at which a person may get drunk for the sole purpose of bragging about how wasted they got and how little they remember.
The root cause of the problem must be addressed. While we try to make ourselves out to be a tolerant nation, it is the hidden intolerance within all of us that leads to anger. When mixed with alcohol, you get the violent cocktail that we see almost every day in the media.
