Violence In the Media
Violence is an action expressed through anger, aggression and feelings according to Websters dictionary; “The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another self, or deprivation.” (Krug author of “The World Report on Violence and Health.“). In the past few years it has been questioned whether or not society has been impacted by the daily occurrence of violence in the media. It has been proven in many statistics and research that it does in fact provoke violence in young minds. Through exposure of violence the meaning it has been misinterpreted of its purpose and has many effects on the youths minds.
“In 1996, the world health assembly declared violence a major public health issue.“ (Krug) Violence in the Media is everywhere, on Television, music, video games, the internet, magazines and even in books. “More than one-thousand scientific studies and reviews conclude that significant exposure to media violence increases the risk of aggressive behavior in certain children and adults, provoking them to violence.” (Hogan) The average child and adolescent spends about 24 hours per week viewing television. “By the time today’s children reach age 70, they will have spent seven to ten years of their lives watching television,“ writes Shelov, the author of “Media Violence. “ If people are not spending 24 hours a week watching the television, then they are viewing it on the internet or reading it in the newspaper. In the television, you can view shows or movies that create images in peoples minds that portrays reality…but may just be fantasy.
