Silly, violent, waste of time, and addicting are just some of the descriptions of what is taking over the entertainment industry among youth and young adults. Video games are becoming increasingly popular today because they range in various genres and are suitable for different ages depending on the maturity ratings. The entertaining aspect of video games is that everyone and anyone can play and there is a game for just about anything whether it’d be based on a Disney movie, a war, or sports. Considering that video games are entertaining and suitable for all types of ages, why are a number of people against them and why are they being the “cause” of violence in society?
Sure, one may find videogames to be a very time consuming hobby, but that doesn’t make those who play them violent or unintelligent. Some believe it teaches youth how to kill, but I find this information to be disagreed upon because video games are beneficial to people, many myths about video game violence has been proven false, and violence in youth is based on psychological issues not revolving around games.
An organization called Mothers Against Videogame Addiction and Violence is one that is against any type of video game or media that supports it. The MAVAV organization has put facts on their website that “video games are proven to prevent proper development of social interactive skills which is needed for a happy enjoyable life (www.mavav.org).” The MAVAV also believes that violent video games teach people how to kill. Despite the articles and facts included on the MAVAV website I find that video games are not the cause of violence, bad grades, or isolation from society. What the MAVAV organization provides as a fact can actually be proven more as a hasty generalization. If one were to look at actual gamers who were intelligent, hard working, and active in society then it would be a completely different story.
