Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. (Jn. 15:13). On December 14, 2012, a young teacher lost her life trying to protect innocent children. She is a brave heroine who touched many lives and her kindness will live on through her legacy.
On this tragic day, gunman Adam Lanza forced his way into Shady Brook Elementary School. He began to shoot students and staff. After killing 15 students and two teachers in the first classroom, he entered the classroom of 27 year old Victoria Soto. Soto, knowing that their life was in danger, had already hidden her sixteen students in a closet. When the gunman burst in, Soto lied and told him that her students were in the gymnasium. As a result, she lost her life to protect the lives of her kids. Vicki is the named that she was called by the many people who loved her. She gave five years of her life to the Shady Brook Elementary School. Molding young minds was her priority, but being the “fun” teacher was the most important part of her life. She loved her kids and wanted the best for them, teaching them something new every day. Her colleagues adored her and described her as a diamond in the rough.(metaphor). We really don’t know a lot about her, but to know that she cared for those kids more than she cared for herself speaks volumes of her character, commitment, and dedication. Her friends and family describes her as having a heart as pure as gold. (Simile). According to her sister, she was such a sweet and compassionate person; the school would smile whenever she pulled up.(personification). Soto left behind so many memories and she will always be in the hearts of the ones who loved her. Several dedications were made in her memory. The Victoria Soto endowed memorial scholarship fund was created following her death. This fund is awarded to the students who aspire to become teachers. In January 2013, the mayor of Stratford proposed naming a local school The Victoria Soto Elementary School. A public facility in Puerto Rico, which is where her dad was born, will carry her name as well. Soto and Five other teachers who lost their lives in the shooting were post humously awarded the Presidential Citizen Award at a special ceremony in remembrance. The award honors Americans who performed outstanding deeds of service. The class of 2003 at Stratford High School, in which Soto was a part of, established the Victoria L. Soto memorial fund in her honor. It will be used to create a memorial at the high school. There is also a Victoria Soto volunteer award coming from her nutmeg membership. This award is given to volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty. Victoria will be remembered as an amazing sister, cousin, teacher, and friend who died protecting who she valued most, her kids. Her story made me look at life in a whole new prospective. It’s not all about us; we have to think about others around us. We should also be prepared to make brave decisions and choices because we are not the only ones who will be affected. She will forever be a brave heroine in my heart

We read Macbeth because Shakespeare’s plays are timeless in the lessons we can learn from them. Why do we read it when it wasn’t intended for schools and when Shakespeare uses a form of English that often differs from how we speak today? Yet Shakespeare gives us many valuable lessons to learn from his plays. For example, in the act Macbeth; Macbeth says “Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player/ that struts and frets his house upon the stage” and when Duncan says “that you can’t judge someone’s mind looking at his face”. He teaches us ambition, good and evil, power, appearance and reality, politics, the supernatural, and physical and mental illness. This is something we already live in the real world. Shakespeare teaches us that ambition can drive us to doing things we never thought we were capable of doing. Like when Macbeth killed Kind Duncan to become king, yet Duncan had been a good king to Macbeth and Lady Macbeth by letting them stay under the king’s roof and giving them good king men ship. The fact that he proves that good always wins and the evil is always victorious as long as it can last. He also lets us know that power can be wanted but not always be able to have it in possession and that’s where the ambitions drives us to commits evilness. The most important thing is that he teaches that our self-conscious will always follow us and may never let us sleep. In the case with Lady Macbeth, she at first was an evil women known with no heart but yet in the begging of act 5 she proves that she can longer live with herself and all the murders and crimes that were committed by her and Macbeth. Now Macbeth was the opposite because at the begging of the play he showed repentance and fear, then throughout the play his ambition drove him to forget about his conscious and got rid of everything and everyone that got in his way. This proves that doing evil can cause mental illness and that evil never will win again the…

Some may argue that the greatest love story to date is Romeo and Juliet: the love; the passion; the unlikely pair. Although Romeo and Juliet may be a great tale of two unlikely lovers, it could never compare to Our Christian Story. However, throughout these two renowned stories, elements of love and sacrifice can be demonstrated frequently. Out of love, we are able to make sacrifices for those whom which we hold dear to our hearts; when humanity betrayed God by consuming fruit from the forbidden tree, He displayed an unconditional love by sending His only son, Jesus Christ, to absolve us from sin. This represents a vital bond of love that has, over time, remained between God and humanity, but to experience this bliss we must freely embrace…

    Gloria Anzaldua

    • 2147 Words
    • 5 Pages

Gloria Anzaldua’s short essay, Towards a New Consciousness, begins with the description of her mixed culture, a mestiza, and the conflicts she faces in being torn between being Mexican and Native American. Anzaldua expresses her struggle of her torn heritages by describing herself as being caught between two cultures and their values. Instead of being able to love and respect both cultures, Anzaldua feels as if we people feel the need to take up one side of our heritage and end up hating the other part. She paints an image as standing on an opposite side of a riverbank, yelling back and forth answers and questions showing that we eventually end up favoring one side and only getting pieces of the other side of the “river” or other culture. Anzaldua’s aspiration is that somehow we can eventually be on both sides of this riverbank, or even veer off and not choose either side but begin a new river. Anzaldua portrays that we do not have to choose one culture or one belief, because if we do, we will eventually hate ourselves for choosing one side of us that we are ashamed to show. In Anzaldua’s section under “Tolerance for Ambiguity”, she goes on to say that when we, mestizas, feel comfortable with what we know and what we are costumed to believing. When we continue with this one way of thinking and one way of culture, we put up borders or walls that block all of the other wonderful possibilities and other ideas of custom that we could be exploring. In order to “break down the duality that keeps her a prisoner” (Anzaldua 100), a mestiza must start with herself and the struggles of herself and the inner consciousness. Anzaldua believes that once one is able to accomplish the inner self, the end to rape, war, and violence in the world can come to a stop. We all must stop and answer the problems within ourselves then we will be able to address problems between people of all races and also the differences between men and women.…
