Ukraine sent armored vehicles and artillery to retake Slovyansk, a stronghold for pro-separatist forces, defying President Vladimir Putin’s demand to pull back troops with Russia’s army massed across the border.
Interior Ministry forces were dispatched at 4:30 a.m. local time to drive out militants and free hostages, including eight international monitors, minister Arsen Avakov said on Facebook. Rebels shot down two helicopters, killing two pilots, the Defense Ministry said. Acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov said in a statement “many” rebels were killed, wounded or captured.’’ The United Nations Security Council is preparing to hold an emergency meeting at Russia’s request.
“We’re ready to hold talks with protesters or their representatives,” Avakov said on the government website as troops surrounded Slovyansk. “But terrorists and armed separatists will only get the inevitable payback.”
The U.S. and the European Union blame Russia for fomenting unrest in Ukraine’s easternmost, largely Russian-speaking regions and have threatened wider sanctions to target Russia’s economy unless Putin helps ease tensions. Putin yesterday urged Ukraine to withdraw forces from the east, as the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk slip out of the Kiev government’s control.

In this article she exposes the Russian government for being heartless and uncaring toward their own people as they pursue their own goals. In Crying Wolf: The Return of War to Chechnya author Venora Bennett states that one of the terrorist attacks that was used, as a justification for the occupation of Chechnya, may not have even been carried out by Chechens. While we do not know if it was carried out by Chechens or not, what we do know is that the Russian government didn't care if they were or not because they did not take the time to check the facts of their intelligence, and that for the Russian leaders the ends justify the…

He implores the American people to contemplate about "innocent victims," a "modern wave of terrorism," and the battle that one day can "plague greater than Syria 's borders" (Putin, APFCFR). This statement advocates his audience to recognize the consequences of their preceding military conflict and to create connections with current disputes to ones that occurred in the past. Putin then provides a prospective not relating towards the United States. When not directly accusing the United States of exacerbating international conflicts he permits his audience to acknowledge that their government provides "foreign weapons," which have contributed to one of the "bloodiest wars in the world" (Putin, APFCFR). This statement is perhaps the most compelling Putin makes. He does this because he acknowledges Americans as strong-willed individuals who can take action into their hands; he wants them to reason with themselves and promote ideals genuine to humans as a…

Now these disgusting savages have taken their atrocious acts to another level. They have attacked our workers who are bettering their infrastructure by building railroads, and our diplomats who’ve only worked to improve our countries’ mutual partnership. This is an act act of betrayal. They took advantage of us, then slit our throats when our back were turned. Our remaining diplomats, workers, and Chinese allies have all banded together as a desperate attempt to stave off the rebels. Thousands of our supporters have died fighting for their lives.…

Russia is a country where there is lots of space, but there aren't many people occupying it. The communication in Russia is not very good because it is a really big country that had no way of defending itself. The government and the barriers that kept other countries from staying out of Russia did not work as much because they still couldn’t prevent invasions in their territory. The ending of World War I led to the deadline of the tsarist rule, which marked the beginning of a civil war. Vladimir Lenin and his party (Bolshevik), in 1920 he planted a communist rule which would administer the country of Russia for 71 years. The Russian country was always invaded by other neighbors (countries.) But Russia defended themselves by using two different types of methods. The first method was to abandon territories which they would back away, which forced the invaders to carry on all their supply, by leaving them out in really bad weather. The second method was to make the invaders use their ammo, by bringing out soldiers. But from the 1850’s - 1900’s, the force upon improvement did rise up. But they didn’t know to improve. There was a barrier between people which supported human rights and other that wanted something different. Commanding for improvement moved on between the 1860’s and the 1870’s. Slavery was was put at an end, and systems of courts by judges were set up. But…

Politkovskaya understands this as another inhibition of democratic consolidation, elucidating that “certain habits [of the state] from the past remain untouched. Foremost among them is a pathological lack of respect for people, especially those who, in spite of everything, work devotedly and selflessly, who love the cause they are serving” (171). Her chronicles of the Nord-Ost hostage crisis, where state security apparatuses gassed the theater hall where thousands of hostages were being held, illustrates a government more concerned with proving to itself and the world that Russia will triumph over “the forces of international terror”. The misguided and irresponsible actions taken by the state during the Nord-Ost hostage crisis left numerous innocent hostages dead as a result of the gassing and the security apparatuses decision to bus the hostages to an understaffed and cordoned off hospital. The attempts by victims’ families to find justice were inhibited by a judicial system, which chose to follow the state’s trope of a victory over international terror, rather than allow the grieved to be compensated for their horrific losses. These families were antagonized by the media and the judicial system, which took precedence to “the interests of the state, which take priority over personal needs,” and as Politkovskaya claims, this is…

“‘I’m a Russian occupant’ seems to be going viral because of its catchy patriotic slogan and futuristic effects. Twitter, VK and Facebook exploded with users proudly exclaiming, “I’m a Russian occupant!” And sharing the video” (Kaufman). The video was narrated in Russian and accompanied by English subtitles. The last paragraph of subtitles read, “Understand I do not need your hypocritical ‘freedom,’ I do not need your rotten ‘democracy.’ Everything you call ‘western values’ is alien to me. I have other interests! I’ll politely warn you for the last time: Do not mess with me! I build peace, I love peace, but more than anyone I know how to fight” (Ivanov). This video is directed towards the west and is similar to propaganda of pre Cold War era times. Russian citizens love their country and a stronger, more centralized state makes them proud of their historic…

As a Ukrainian I take pride in the struggle my other nation for liberty and self-government. In September of 2014 I had the opportunity to attend the President of Ukraine’s, Petro Poroshenko, address to a joint session of Congress. My Representative, Walter B Jones, gave me his ticket. I got to sit in the upper balcony of the chamber of the United Sates House of Representatives and realize something. I realized that I was not alone in my pride and that I should not be afraid to show it.…

Attempts to seize the Donetsk Regional State Administration (RSA) building began since pro-Russian protests erupted in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, in the wake of the 2014 Ukrainian revolution. Pro-Russian protesters occupied the Donetsk RSA from 1–6 March, before being removed by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). On 6 April, 1,000–2,000 people gathered at a rally in Donetsk to demand a status referendum similar to the one held in Crimea in March. The demonstrators stormed the RSA building, and took control of its first two floors. They said that if an extraordinary legislative session was not held by regional officials to implement a status referendum, they would take control of the regional government with a "people's mandate", and dismiss all elected regional councilors and members of parliament. As these demands were not met, the activists held a meeting in the RSA building, and voted in favor of independence from Ukraine. They proclaimed the Donetsk People's Republic.…

2014 marked the beginning of the Crimean Crisis. The Crimea, a small Peninsula near the Black sea, chose to succeed from the Ukraine and was annexed by Russia. The Crimean parliament displayed a near total support for joining the Federation of Russia, with approximately 97% of voters backing the motion.1 The Crimea has been apart of the Ukraine since 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union, yet the population continues to display strong loyalist ideals towards Russia. The current Russian-loyalist political stance the Crimea was shaped by Russia freeing the Crimean's from centuries of oppression and slavery under Ottoman occupation, as well as the Russian influence and culture that developed in the region following that.…
