Vegetarianism: The Doorway to a Healthier Minnesota
As Minnesotans, we tend to think of ourselves pretty highly. Every winter we endure feet and feet of snow and temperatures as low as -40 degrees without batting an eyelid. Our crime rates are one of the lowest in the country, our education is spectacular, and obviously the term “Minnesota nice” came about for good reason. Unfortunately among all of these great things about our state, health is not necessarily one of them. But what can we do about this problem? Be more active? Drink more water? Ignore the problem and hope it goes away? The true answer is in what us Minnesotans are eating, and eating quite frequently- meat. It can indefinitely be proven that a vegetarian diet is the healthiest diet for a Minnesotan to have. This is because vegetarianism is proven to prevent and treat diabetes, help to maintain a healthy weight, and contribute significantly less pollution than a meat-eating diet. But before you roll your eyes and call me a tree-hugging, PETA loving hippie, hear me out and listen to my reasoning. Who knows, it could be the first step you take towards being a healthier Minnesotan.
This may or may not come as a shock to you, but diabetes is a major problem in Minnesota. This horrible and incurable disease is such a problem in our state that it has even been referred to as an epidemic. An incredible one in five Minnesotans will develop diabetes in their lifetime. This percentage is astounding. This disease is not only the most common in Minnesotans, but it is picking up speed like a runaway train. “The prevalence of diabetes in Minnesota has increased by nearly 50% over the past decade” (Minnesota Department of Health). You may say, “Yeah 50% is a lot, but diabetes is treatable. What’s the big deal?” The big deal is that although diabetes is treatable, it is not curable.
