Vanadium
Vanadium is a metal that has an atomic mass of 50.9414 g.mol 1 and an atomic number of 23. It is a soft white substance that can be found with many different minerals. Vanadium has 4 energy levels, the first energy level contains two protons, the second contains 8 protons, the third contains 11 protons and the fourth contains 2 protons. Vanadium is a metal that is commonly found in jet engines, high speed airframes, and ferrovanadium, a steel additive.
Vanadium is toxic to humans and animals. Vanadium is present in foods such as buckwheat, soy beans, apples, eggs, olive oil, and sunflower oil. Exposure to vanadium can cause pneumonia, bronchitis, inflammation of the stomach and intestines, cardiac and vascular diseases, damage to the nervous system, bleeding of the liver and kidneys, skin rashes, severe trembling and paralyses, noses bleeds and throat pains, weakening, sickness and headaches, dizziness, and behavioral changes. Symptoms of overexposure to vanadium are conjunctivitis, nasopharyngitis, cough, labored breathing, rapid heartbeat, lung changes, chronic bronchitis, skin pallor, greenish black tongue, and allergic skin rash.
Vanadium can also be found underwater in algae, plants, Invertebrates, and fish. In shellfish vanadium bioaccumulates causes concentrations of 105 to106 times greater than the concentration found in seawater. In animals vanadium can cause breathing disorders, paralyses, failure of the liver and kidneys, and can harm the reproductive system in both male and female animals. Vanadium can also cause DNA alterations.

Vanadium also has other common forms such as Vanadium Oxide and Vanadium Pentoxide. Vanadium Oxide is more toxic than Vanadium. Vanadium Oxide is most commonly found in sulfuric acid. Vanadium Pentoxide is created when you weld vanadium in its pure state. The gases from Vanadium Pentoxide can cause bronchitis, pneumonia and in rare cases death.

One example of an industrial plant which pioneered the production of vanadium from oil fly ash was the Canadian Petrofina plant in Quebec which operated during the 1960's and 1970's [Whigham, 1965]. Ash from the steam boilers routinely contained greater than 15% V2O5; subsequent research led to the development of the flowsheet shown in Figure 1.6. In this process, ash is leached with sulfuric acid at pH 0.2 and 90°C. The vanadium in the filtered leach solution is oxidized to V+5 using sodium chlorate and the vanadium is then precipitated as red cake by adding ammonia to the solution to raise the pH to about 2. Extractions and precipitation efficiencies of about 95% gave an overall vanadium recovery of 90 %. Whigham had not give the iron…

Nutrition, and even more so supplements, has been plagued with myths from the innersports circles and more importantly the media for years. Not only have we been given a plethora of information on the subject, there has also been a plethora of misinterpretation. I feel that there are too many writers who try to capitalize on certain extremes in the nutrition arena, and fail to put together a cohesive and coherent nutritional plan. The goal of a nutritional plan is to instill basic guidelines to follow throughout your athletic and lifelong career, not follow an eight week diet consisting of cabbage soup! In the following article, I plan on outlining the basic principles of a good nutrition and supplementation program that will allow you to achieve optimal performance.…

Fluoride Poisoning. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has several incidents on record of excessive levels of airborne or water-borne fluoride sickening or killing people and animals. In one instance, a New York Indian reservation's herd of cattle was all but destroyed by fluoride and other industrial pollutants, causing much hardship and prompting a massive lawsuit against nearby aluminum manufacturers Reynolds and Alcoa. Of course, it was settled out of court and you didn't hear about.…

Hazard identification is an important part of learning about pesticides and whether or not to use them. This asks the question; Does exposure to substance caused increased likelihood of adverse health effects such as cancer or birth defects. When planning to use chemicals like Malathion it is important to learn as much as possible about it. Malathion is a man-made organophosphate insecticide that is commonly used to control mosquitos and a variety of insects that attack fruits vegetables, landscaping plants, and shrubs. (Department of Health, 2009). Malathion is also used indoors to control insects and ticks on pets like cats and dogs. Short-term exposure to high levels of Malathion affects the nervous system causing increased heart rate, nausea, headaches, diarrhea, and cramps. I have found no information on long-term effects on humans due to exposure. This doesn’t mean that is none, it means…

In the article “Literature, Imagination and Human Rights,” Willie Van Peer proposes that through excursions into the literary canon one can evoke their imaginative sense and ultimately escape an encapsulated society, through developing a higher ethical awareness. Further he notes the “Edification hypothesis” which articulates that reading literature makes the reader more socially tolerant, more perceptive, and more politically conscious. In other words, he emphasizes the role literature plays in triggering this disencapsulation mentality and how by association guides our actions towards the establishment of a better world.…
