Since 1909 with the release of the very first vampire movie, vampires have found their way into our lives. From 1909 to 1980 over 150 different vampire horror films had found there way onto the screen. These creatures of the night never fail to intrigue audiences from around the world. The legends of monsters called vampires have been around for thousands of years, but only in 1909 with the release of   silent films one like Vampire of the Coast where we were able to bring these fiends to life.
Vampire of the Coast was the first vampire movie ever made. No information besides the title and year was found. But another silent film made 13 years later called Nosferatu (directed by F.W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck as the vampire) became the first major vampire classic. Nosferatu, based on Bram Stokers Dracula written in 1897, is still very popular today and is sometimes mentioned in today’s TV shows and cartoons like SpongeBob SquarePants.
In the story of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a young lawyer named Jonathan Harker is sent to Dracula’s castle   in Transylvania to meet the Count, a wealthy man interested in buying a home in Harker's town. Once he arrives at the castle he realizes the Count is a vampire and he soon later realizes he is a prisoner.
Almost every early vampire movie made has been in one way or another based on this story. The story of Dracula has changed over the years but the character himself by name has appeared in over 60 films
The 1930’s were one of the most unsuccessful decades in vampire filmmaking. Only about 6 vampire movies were made from 1931 to 1936. In 1931 a Hungarian actor named Bela Lugosi starred as the main character in the movie Dracula. Lugosi became well known for this role and he continued his bloodthirsty career playing a vampire again in 6 other films. Dracula was one of the most famous vampire movies released in the 30’s, along with films like Vampyre (1932) and Mark of the Vampire (1935).
