Everyone has different values and morals they live their lives by. Some values and morals may be similar, some may be different. A common value that many people have is hope. Hope provides a sense of relief and happiness in people that things will turn out the best for them. The value of hope is shown often by Stephen King in the novel Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption through Andy Dufresne. Stephen King also shows hope through many characters the film Dolores Claiborne. Through his conflicting scenarios, Stephen King was able to provide his readers with an idea of hope in the lives of the characters in his novels. Hope can provide a sense of relief and happiness in an individual. Hope is the feeling that what someone wants can be had. Also the feeling that what one desires may come true.
In the novel Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption there are numerous examples of hope. Stephen King foreshadows Andy Dufresne’s escape when he scratches his initials into his cell wall and chunks fall out. This is an example of hope because while Andy begins digging the hole in his cell wall it provides him hope that he will be able to escape and be the free man he wants to be.
Another example of hope in Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption is when Tommy Williams arrives at Shawshank and tells his story about Elwood Blatch. According to Williams, Blatch had said he murdered a man named Glenn Quentin and his lover. Elwood Blatch had claimed”There’s one guy doing time up-Maine for these two people I killed. It was the guy and the wife of the slob who’s doing the time.” This gave Andy hope that he could present Tommy Williams story to a judge and get out of Shawshank for good without the need of escaping.
