Values and Ethics in a Global Setting
The writer will analyze in this paper how an individual reconciles personal, organizational, cultural values as well as ethical values in a global setting. Values drive behavior and therefore need to be consciously stated, but they also need to be affirmed by actions (Kerns, 2003, para. 1). The purpose of this paper is to show how an individual can apply his or her values to any conflict in a global setting and remain true to him or herself.
Personal Values
According to Wikipedia (2010):
Values are one's judgements about what is important in life. Values are an integral part of every culture. Along with beliefs and worldview assumptions, they generate behavior. Being part of a culture that shares a common core set of values creates expectations and predictability without which a culture would disintegrate and its members would lose their personal identity and sense of worth. Values tell people what is good, beneficial, important, useful, beautiful, desirable, appropriate...etc. They answer the question of why people do what they do. Values help people solve common human problems for survival. Over time, they become the roots of traditions that groups of people find important in their day to day lives. Values can be positive or negative; some are destructive. To understand people of other cultures, we must come to understand the values, beliefs and assumptions that motivate their behavior of there values over (para. 2).
Reconciliation of personal values in a global setting is first done by identifying which personal values conflict with global values. There has to be a common ground. Where personal and global values clash, on the other hand, again the key is to find where the clash occurs, and to try and find common ground. Universal values of good must be the point of departure in efforts at reconciling those two sets of values (Richter and Barnum, 1994).
