The use of drugs to enhance performance in sport will not disappear. Athletes go after every competitive opportunity and advantage to be successful at top level. Sports performers enjoy the success in financially and in personal glory. The nature of sports shows a strong desire to win, and some athletes will do anything to rise to the top. Every top athlete wants to get an edge somehow over his or her opponents. Many athletes have turned to supplements to gain this edge and the use of drugs has increased strikingly. Almost all top level competitors are full time and, even if not paid, are to all purposes professional. There is huge pressure to train more and harder. It’s most likely that athletes will have the need and the urge to take drugs. Among athletes they believe that it is impossible to succeed without drugs as scientific evidence is proved that benefits are gained from drug use. Performance enhancing drugs can give athletes advantages and some can be harmful and damage the athletes help. Drug use in sport has been around since 400 BC. Performance enhancing drugs first banned was in 1928 when Thomas Hicks won the marathon after taken an injection of strychnine in the middle of the Olympics. The first official ban on stimulating substances by a sporting organisation was introduced by the International Amateur Athletic Federation. Using drugs to have advantages and cheat the sport is becoming more knowing. In 1976, the East German swimming team won 11 out of 13 Olympic events, later on they found out the government had been giving them anabolic steroids even though the bad health dangers. The drug use in sports in worldwide knowing and still people hardly rise and eyebrow when some famous athletes fail drug testing. There have been interviews of athletes that have admit they recon most Olympic athletes that are successful have used banned substances during their carrier.
