US History Film Analysis: Saving Private Ryan Saving Private Ryan is a film that was produced in 1998 that portrays the efforts of a World War II Normandy Invasion. After leading a company of Rangers in the battle for Omaha beach on D-Day on June 6, 1944, Captain John Miller was sent on a mission three days later to find Private James Ryan and bring him home safely. Ryan's three brothers had all been killed in action and the law required him returned to his family. He was fighting with his unit somewhere inland, but the unit was scattered when they were dropped so all they had was his general location. Miller chooses seven men for this dangerous mission. They go across the countryside, in the meantime losing two of their men. Eventually, they find Ryan with his unit and awaiting a German counter attack protecting the bridge. He refuses to leave his unit and Miller agrees that his squad will stay to help them defend their position. The Germans attack in large numbers and Miller and most of his squad are killed, but Ryan survives and makes it home. At the beginning and the end they show Ryan as an old man, grateful for everything in his life and conforming with his loved ones if he had lived up to all he was meant to be. He shows his gratitude towards everyone who risked their life for him and his country. The two main characters are Tom Hanks playing Captain John H. Miller and Matt Damon playing James Francis Ryan. Their roles are by far the most significant because if it weren’t for Captain Miller, Private Ryan may not have had the chance to carry on his family legacy since his three brothers were all gone. Captain Miller is a selfless, brave man who was determined to serve justice no matter where he went. James Francis Ryan notices Captain Miller’s virtues and carries them on the rest of life to make Captain proud for all he did for him. Saving Private Ryan has been known for its realistic portrayal of World War II combat. More specifically, the scene

    1. During the 1920’s, the south was filled with hatred and racism towards black people. Southern states were segregated and had many Jim Crow laws in place that led to inferior treatment of black people. Lynching took place on a frequent basis. Blacks wanted a chance at peace and prosperity and thought they could find it in the North where factories where looking for employment. After the civil war, many freed blacks remained on plantations as sharecroppers. With no money they were unable to leave the Jim Crow South. After WW1, industry, especially the auto-industry of Detroit, in the North started to boom during the 1920’s. This attracted all the freedmen to migrate in search of jobs. This was a time they finally had an opportunity to make a new life for themselves. Henry Ford’s new plant was said to be large enough to employ all of Nashville. Factories were sprouting all over requiring workers who were willing to work for cheap wages. This was the best time for black people to leave the South and make a living for themselves away from any prejudice and…

Major problems for immigrants who traveled to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries occurred. Newcomers to U.S. cities had few or no skills to perform any job in the American economy, could not speak English, and much more. One social problem that I would like to address is that of housing and feeding immigrants if they came to America with no money. I would like to help immigrants who come to America with no money, a large family, and no real skills to find a good-paying job to support their family.…

In this epic re-enactment of the day of, and leading up to D-Day (June 6th 1944) this movie excellently captivates the German, British, and American experience. The American Paratroops are led by Lt. Col. Vandervoort, a pillar of strength played by John Wayne. His assumed leadership role makes the movie have that key component of a character, through his role of being the backbone of the Paratroops. Another member of this huge cast, Robert Mitchum, assumes the Brigadier General position of the American forces on Omaha beach whom retains a very determined role. Mitchum creates an orderly setting in the troops with his composed personality and keen reactions as a Brig. General. The German side is presented by the very mono-toned, emotionless role of Maj. Gen. Gunther Blumentritt played by German national Curt Jürgens, who throughout the entire movie is scripted with his native language, adding a very realistic effect. Other stars in this all-star international cast include Eddie Albert, Jean-Louis Barrault, Richard Burton, Red Buttons, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Gert Frobe, Peter Lawford, Kenneth More, Edmond O'Brien, Robert Ryan, Jean Servais, Rod Steiger, Irena Demick and Robert Wagner. Aswell, Paul Anka, who wrote the film’s title song, shows up as an army Private.…
